As the last frosts lift and the days stretch out, the farm is bursting back into life. After the stillness of winter, spring always feels like the start of something fresh – and this year is no different. Here’s a look at what’s been happening on Rotmell as we step into the busy, hopeful season ahead.

Out of the Cold
Winter brought its usual challenges – long nights, biting winds, below freezing temperatures – but we came through in good shape. Our animals stayed healthy and happy and our land wintered very well. We’ve seen strong body condition across the herd and flock, setting us up well for the weeks ahead.

Calving Kicks Off
Our calving season is now underway, and it’s always a special time. We’re seeing strong, alert calves on the ground already, and the cows are doing a fine job mothering them. It never gets old watching those first wobbly steps or hearing the low murmur of a calf finding its feet.
We’re keeping a close eye on each birth and ensuring both cow and calf have a quiet, stress-free start. Early signs are promising for a solid, healthy group this year.
Spring Lambs on the Hill
Not to be outdone, lambing is now well underway too. Our ewes have taken the shift into spring in their stride, and the new lambs are arriving with real vigour. There’s nothing quite like seeing a field full of bouncing lambs at first light – a reminder of why we do what we do.
We’ve put a lot of thought into ewe condition, nutrition, and paddock selection over the winter, and it’s showing in the quality of the lambs we’re getting.
Regenerative Grass Work
This spring, we’re doubling down on our regenerative grazing approach – managing livestock to benefit soil health, biodiversity, and pasture longevity. Rotational grazing continues to be a core part of what we do, giving pastures time to recover and deepening root structures that hold carbon and resist drought.
We’re already seeing signs of increased ground cover and a broader mix of grasses, clovers, and herbs – all of which support healthier animals and healthier soil. Our dung beetles are back at work too, doing nature’s cleanup with amazing efficiency.
With moisture still in the ground and temperatures rising, now is the crucial window for setting up the grazing season right. Our focus will be on stock density, rest periods, and reading the grass – not just the calendar.

Looking Ahead
As we head deeper into spring, there’s still plenty to do – tagging calves, marking lambs and pasture monitoring. But there’s a real sense of momentum now, and we’re looking forward to seeing how this season unfolds.
Thanks for following along with our journey – whether you’re a neighbour, a customer, or just someone who loves seeing the rhythm of the seasons play out. We’ll be sharing more updates soon.
Until then, here’s to greener grass, strong stock, and brighter days.
